The much-awaited music video of Lee Hyori‘s ‘Going Crazy’ is out! After the teaser video which revealed the beautiful diva disguised as a male, fans were anticipating the final video product. This is her fourth music video off her latest comeback album ‘Monochrome’.

Released on June 19, Lee Hyori is seen with a facial hair and portraying a male figure. Playing the ‘bad boy’ role, Hyori is seen flirting and seducing the female models on set with a cool persona. Halfway through the video, the diva returns donning on a white lingerie gown.

What did you think of her gender-switching role? Did the diva pull off the manly look convincingly?

Beast released the music video of their song “I’m Sorry” through their agency’s Twitter account on June 19. The video was based on the fan event Beauty Party, in which the group performed in front of 10,000 fans at Gangnam Maru Park in Seoul on June 15. The video includes scenes of group rehearsing as well as scenes of several performances. They used a special aerial camera called a Helicam to give a full view of the 10,000 fans that were gathered there. All the numbers on the video were directed by Lee Gi Baek, who also directed Yang Yo Sub’s “Caffeine” music video.

An agency official says, “The video contains beautiful scenes coordinated by Beast and Beauty (the name of the group’s official fan club). It was made with the help of the fans who filled the concert even in the hot weather.”

Beast will be holding a solo concert in July.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Ok, so this isn’t really fully a TL;DR on Korean culture and might not be fully relevant to you, but some people might be interested in different food lifestyles in Korea. You can get by eating Korean food just fine. It’s lovely and delicious, but you might be interested in trying a different lifestyle, for different dietary purposes, like our own. We’ve found Korean food to be a bit too…carb-heavy, and that lead to us getting a little softer than usual. We told you that we dropped carbs to lose weight, so here are more of the specifics on how we got by.

We mentioned two key phrases that got us by: Bap Baeh-Jusayo “No rice, please” and “Hwang-Jay Diet-uh” which is…you know, I’m not too sure what hwang-jae means. Diet-uh means diet, that much I know, but Hwang-jae? Not sure. I just learned that phrase and it worked perfectly well when we’re at restaurants and trying to avoid carbs.

We also took a lot more responsibility in preparing our own food, primarily for the low carb purposes, but also because we’re just trying to eat healthier ingredients as well. White sugar and white flour are great tasting, but not all too great for your body. So we started using different sugars like Xylotol, for example. We use a lot of flax seed, chia seeds, coconut flour and coconut oil, almond flour, protein powder, textured vegetable protein, and such. These products aren’t easy to find in Korea, and when we do find some of them, they’re RIDICULOUSLY overpriced. So we order lots of stuff online.

Also, yes, I know there’s lots of debates about what ingredients are good or not. Some ingredients seem healthy, but then one blog will say that they’re not healthy, and another blog will say something else. The point is, we’re trying to avoid foods and ingredients that we know aren’t all too great, you know? So much food is so processed, and you just don’t know how good it is for you. Sure, some people might eat it and be healthy tanks. For us, though, we’re feeling a lot healthier and more energized after taking more control over what we eat and what ingredients go into our foods.

We talked about our spinach smoothie, which is more of a lumpy, and it sounds gross, but we actually REALLY LIKE IT! When Martina was last in Canada, she went to an alternative food course, and learned some cool recipes, the spinach smoothie being one of them:

Healthy Green Breakfast Lumpy

Ingredients

1 whole organic apple chopped (if non-organic peel it first)
1 lemon chopped (peeled but not seeded)
1 large handful of spinach chopped
6 additional leaves of sturdy greens (ex: kale, collard greens)
1 heaping tsp of peeled fresh ginger
3 cups of cold water

Directions

1. Dump all of it into the blender and blend on maximum speed until no longer super chunky.
2. Drink it immediately or seal it in an airtight container for one day.
3. Feel like a better person because you drank down a bunch of healthy green slop

Another thing we’ve started doing is something that we heard about a lot before but were too hesitant to try. I think the English word for it is “exercise” or something like that. People go to these rooms called “gyms” and they lift and push heavy things, or they walk on the spot on machines that let them walk without going anywhere. It sounds silly, and we refused to do it for the vast majority of our married life, but over the past couple of months we’ve given in and tried it out. It’s not that bad, you know? We feel like we’re looking better than before, and our bodies are getting somewhat tighter, and we can see and feel muscles that we didn’t know existed before. It’s weird.

After the gym we make protein shakes:

Berry Soymilk Protein Shake (For One Person)

Ingredients:

1 (200ml) juice-cartoon of chilled Yonsei Soymilk
1 scoop of unflavoured natural Whey Protien powder (Now Foods)
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp raw cacoa powder
2 heaping tbsp berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or a mix is fine)

Additional Options:

1 tbsp of honey/sugar (if the smoothie is too dull tasting for you)
2-3 ice cubes to make it less thick
1 banana (very carby but makes it more delicious if you don’t care about carbs)
1/4 cup of cool brewed coffee (adds your morning kick)

Instructions:

1. Put all the ingredients into a blender and stir. Let it sit for 1 minute for the chia seeds to expand.
2. Blend on maximum power! VROOM VROOM!
3. Drink it all. It’s easier to drink it in one shot.
4. Yell at the person next to you “BRO YOU EVEN LIFT?!”
—-

Some of you follow us on Twitter. If you don’t, you should! We do cool things on Twitter, like last night when it was 3AM and we made coconut pancakes. We made a Vine video for it. Here’s our recipe for it:

Low Carb Coconut Pancakes

Ingredients:

DRY:
1/2 cup coconut flour
3 tbsp coconut sugar Xylitol (or normal sugar)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
–

WET:

6 large eggs, lightly beaten
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 cup milk (or almond milk if you want)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Additional oil for the pan

Instructions:

1. In a large bowl, whisk together coconut flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and slowly add the melted butter.
3. Add the egg mixture to the coconut flour mixture and stir well to combine. Let it rest for 1 minute until the coconut flour absorbs the liquid.
4.Heat a large frying pan over medium high heat and brush with vegetable oil. Most important part: SMALL pancakes or they will fall apart when you flip them! I use about two big tablespoons of batter onto the frying pan and spread into a circle.
5. Cook until bottom is golden brown and top is set around the edges. Flip carefully and continue to cook until second side is golden brown. Remove from pan and keep warm in tin foil plate or on baking sheet in oven (170c).
6. Eat them mofos any time of day. It’s better really late at night, when you feel like a crazy person for making pancakes at 3AM.

Ok, last recipe we’re going to share, because this seems like a crazy ass long post about recipes, and I’m sure it’s going to be hella sucky to read. This last recipe here is for pizzas we make on our own, and they’re freaking delicious and we like them more than other pizzas we get. Yes, it could be because our standards of pizza have really degraded from being in Korea for so long, and good pizza is hard to come by here, but I’d like to not think that. This pizza, to us, is delicious, and healthy, so give it a shot!

Low Carb Pizza Crust

Ingredients:

1/2 cup flax meal
1/4 cup coconut flour
1/4 cup almond flour
1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp oregano or Italian spice mix
1/2 tsp baking powder
2 eggs

Directions:

1. Mix everything but the eggs in a bowl.
2. Add the 2 eggs and stir until a dough forms. I find using my hands are a lot easier to use than a spoon or whisk.
3. Using parchment or a silicon pad on a cookie sheet, flatten the dough to the thickness you want. You can use a cookie roller but you need to grease it. I use my hands to just press and spread it thin.
4. Bake at 350 degree (F) oven for 12 minutes.
5. Remove from the oven, add pre-cooked* toppings, and then return to the oven. Use the grill setting until the cheese is melted and the crust is golden brown, 2-5 minutes.
6. Eat that pizza and look at the person next to you and be like “I KNOW RIGHT? THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN IT SHOULD BE!”

Side Notes:

*I cook chicken breast cubed with eggplant while the crust cooks. I also make homemade tomato sauce with garlic and I drain the excess liquid so the crust doesn’t get soggy. In order of operation I do tomato sauce, shredded cheese, chicken and eggplant and crumbled feta cubes. After the pizza comes out I use the drained liquid and pour it onto since the crust is very crispy and dry.

Ok, that’s it. It’s a lot more information than we thought we’d be sharing about our lives and how we’re trying to live healthier.

Dear Korean,

Could you give us a primer on the dialects of South Korea’s provinces/areas?

Cactus McHarris

Certainly! Korea is known as a very homogeneous country, and to some degree it is true. It has been a single country for thousands of years, and it is mostly comprised of a single ethnicity. Yet in other respects, Korea has a great deal of regional variations across the peninsula–and regional dialects are a great window into those variations.

Before we get started: if you cannot read Korean characters, it would make sense to review this post, which provides an overview of how to read Korean alphabet.

First, we should get a sense of how regions are divided in Korea. By “regions,” the Korean means a sub-area within the country that is recognized to have similar dialects, cuisines and culture. (E.g. the American South, Japan’s kansai.) Let’s take a look at this map.

This map shows Korea’s administrative districts, which roughly correlates with Korea’s cultural regions. Broadly speaking, there are six regions in Korea: Seoul/Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chuncheong, Yeongnam, Honam and Jeju. Seoul is the city in the center of Korean Peninsula, in blue; Gyeonggi is the province that surrounds it, colored in olive. Gangwon is the large province to the east of Gyeonggi, colored in tan.

Chungcheong region is in the immediate south of Gyeonggi, and encompasses the two provinces (i.e. Chungcheongbuk-do and Chungcheongnam-do) colored in orange and red. Moving further south, Honam refers to the two provinces of Jeollabuk-do and Jeollanam-do, colored in light and dark purple. Yeongnam refers to the two provinces to the east to Honam, i.e. Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do (colored in light green and yellow.) Finally, Jeju is the large island south of Honam, colored in blue.

Each region of Korea displays a great deal of variation in food, temperament, manners, politics and language, in the form of dialects. We will take a look at the dialects of each region in turn, after the jump. Please be mindful that this is a broad overview, rather than the most precise description. Warning — unless you have basic knowledge of Korean, much of the rest of the post will be gibberish.

Seoul/Gyeonggi: It may be a bit odd to call Seoul accent a “dialect,” at least in a sense that the word is used to describe that deviates from the standard language. This is so because the National Institute of Korean Language decreed that the standard Korean shall be: “modern Seoul language used generally by educated people.” In other words, Seoul accent is the standard Korean, and all Koreans are educated to speak like a Seoul person. Thanks to universal public education and mass media, most Koreans actually do. Even Koreans who grew up with an accent can usually shift in and out of the “standard Korean” depending on the circumstance.

This is not to say that the Seoul/Gyeonggi dialect is exactly coterminous with standard Korean. Compared to standard Korean, Seoul/Gyeonggi dialect consistently mispronounces certain words in a certain pattern. For example, this dialect often replaces ㅗ (“oh”) with ㅜ (“ooh”), such that 삼촌 (“uncle”, pronounced “samchon”) would be pronounced like 삼춘 (“samchoon”). There are other differences between Seoul/Gyeonggi dialect and the standard Korean language, but they are so subtle that discussing them would only confuse most people. Let’s move on to the more obvious accents.

Chungcheong: Being that Chungcheong-do is somewhat close to Seoul, Chungcheong accent is still pretty close to the standard Korean. One difference, however, is immediately noticeable in a major Chungcheong-do city like Daejeon–everyone speaks slowly. The long-standing joke about Chungcheong accent goes like this: a father and a son was walking up the hill, when the son saw a huge boulder rolling down the path. The son said: ”Faaatheer, therrre iiiiiiss a bouuuuulderrr rollllllling dowwwwwwn.” Before the son could finish the sentence, however, the boulder had already rolled down and killed the father.

Chungcheong dialect also more commonly replaces ㅗ with ㅜ, and ㅛ (“yo”) with ㅠ (“yu”), especially with verb conjugations. So instead of “하세요” (“haseyo”, “please do”), a Chungcheong dialect would say “하세유” (“haseyu”), or shorten it to “하슈” (“hasyu”).

(Side note: because the Korean Father is from Chungcheong-do, the Korean himself sometimes reverts to this dialect.)

Gangwon: Although Gangwon is a large province in terms of area, the high Taebaek mountain range that bisects the province meant that historically, relatively few people lived in the Gangwon area. Because there were less people living in the area, Gangwon did not really develop a highly distinctive dialect. This is particularly true as to the western part of Gangwon (e.g. with cities like Hongcheon, Chuncheon, etc.) which has no physical barrier between it and Seoul.

But the part of Gangwon that touches on the eastern coast of Korea (also known as “Yeongdong” region, i.e. “east of the mountains”) did develop a fairly unique dialect, as the steep mountains cut off much of the exchange with other regions. Unlike standard Korean (=Seoul dialect,) Gangwon dialect uses tones to distinguish the meaning of homo-phonic words, like Chinese or Vietnamese do. It also has a number of words that are very unusual to speakers of standard Korean, such as 콩칠팔새삼육하다 (“to banter”) or 맨자지 (“white rice”).

Gyeongsang: Also known as “Yeongnam” region, this large and populous region speaks with a strong, harsh accent, befitting its stereotype of being the land of manly men. Compared to the mild and flat Seoul accent, Gyeongsang dialect is dynamic with high peaks and low valleys in its speech. Like Yeongdong dialect, Gyeongsang dialect uses tones to distinguish the meaning of homo-phonic words.

One prominent feature of Gyeongsang dialect is the inability to pronounce certain sounds that appear commonly in Korean. For example, Gyeongsang dialect speakers are unable to pronounce ㅆ when it appears as the beginning sound of the word, leaving them unable to properly pronounce 쌀: “rice”, one of the most commonly used words in Korea. (Instead, Gyeongsang-do dialect speakers are forced to say 살.) Gyeongsang-do dialect is also missing the vowel sound for ㅡ (“eu”), which is instead pronounced as ㅓ (“eo”). So if a Gyeongsang-do person is faced with the word 음악 (“music”), she is likely to pronounce it as 엄악.

Gyeongsang dialect also has trouble with compound vowels, such as ㅘ or ㅢ. In many cases, Gyeongsang dialect drops the first sound of the compound vowel. So 사과 (“apple”) is pronounced like 사가, and 의사 (“doctor”) is pronounced like 이사. Former President Kim Young-sam, who was not only from Gyeongsangnam-do but also was a George W. Bush-esque mangler of words, often faced snickers when he would give a speech about promoting 관광산업 (“tourism industry”)–because his inability to pronounce the consecutive ㅘ, and his penchant for not enunciating words, made him sound like he wanted to promote 강간산업 (“rape industry”).

Jeolla: Also known as “Honam” region, this southwestern region also developed a highly distinctive dialect of its own. Jeolla dialect is slower than Seoul’s, but faster than Chungcheong’s; it has more ups and downs in sound, but not as much as Gyeongsang dialect.

Jeolla-do dialect often adds extra ㅅ and ㅂ in within certain words. For example, 저어라 (“stir”) is pronounced as 젓어라, and 더워 (“hot”) is pronounced as 덥어. Often, ㅏ and ㅓ are pronounced as ㅐand ㅔ, such that 마음 (“mind”) is pronounced as 매음 and 떡 (“rice cake”) is pronounced as 떽.

The most distinctive part of Jeolla dialect is the vowel conjugations that end a sentence. The most commonly known characteristic is the tendency to finish sentences with an extraneous 잉. (Example: 재미없다 –> 재미없다잉, “[This is] not fun.”) Vowel conjugation ~요, which creates a formal honorific, is ~이라 or ~어라. (Example: 좋구만요 –> 좋구만이라 (“[This is] nice.”); 다 먹었어요 –> 다 먹었서라 (“[I] finished the food.”)) Vowel conjugation ~데 is ~디 in Jeolla dialect, such that 그런데 is 그런디.

Jeju: The largest island of Korea is also the most geographically isolated population center. As such, proper Jeju dialect is nearly a separate language from Korean. In fact, in 2011, UNESCO listed Jeju dialect as “critically endangered language,” which means UNESCO considered Jeju dialect to be a separate language.

Jeju dialect is grammatically Korean, but a lot of its vocabulary is nearly unrecognizable to mainland Koreans. This is so because Jeju has been so isolated, it has preserved extremely old Korean words. It also has imported words from Japan, China and Mongolia–the last from Mongolian invasion of Korea in the 14th century (!). Words like 송키 ["vegetable"], 오름 ["mountain"], 야개기 ["neck"], 가사 ["umbrella"] have tenuous connection to mainland Korean.

Vowel conjugation is also significantly different in Jeju dialect. Basic honorific is ~서, which replaces ~요. (Example: 오세요 –> 옵서 ["Please come."]). Honorific question is ~꽈, instead of ~ㅂ니까 . (Example: 아닙니까? –> 아니꽈? ["Isn't it?"]).

(Side note: Jeju dialect word for “potato” is 지슬 ["jiseul"], which is also the title of a recent movie that won the Grand Jury Prize in the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The movie is about the April 3 Massacre in Jeju, in which South Korean military and right-wing militia massacred more than 14,000 civilians of Jeju in 1948.)

We saw 2NE1 leader, CL to promote her single ‘The Baddest Female’ throughout this month.

The song, written and produced by Teddy, was a song that ultimately reflects the personality of the singer that wants to be looked as “cool” instead of “sexy”.

In an interview, CL shared the meaning of ‘The Baddest Female’: “Someone who does her best in what she does, and a passionate person who is not afraid to voice her opinion with confidence.”

Growing up and was enrolled in an international school since young exposed her to globalization and the understanding of culture and perception, that pushed the idea further. “It’s my motto and belief. I realized that people have a certain image of Asian women in mind… they expect Asian women to be introverted and quiet. I wanted to show them there are different sides to Asian women.”

The powerful songstress continues to showcase her talent in her ongoing activities on music charts, international concerts and being with 2NE1 with their upcoming new music activity.

On June 17th TVXQ successfully had a concert in the Tokyo Dome as the final date of their Japanese tour, “TVXQ Live Tour 2013 – Time“. This tour was extremely important for the two artists because it touched all the five domes in Japan, calling it also “5 Dome tour“, meaning that they are great artists able to perform in these big stadiums, gathering 700,000 fans.

BIGEAST is the official name of their Japanese fandom, who, at every concert, is used to use glowsticks in order to make a bright red ocean (red is the official color of the group).

For the last concert of TVXQ tour, their fans had prepared a special project. During the song ”In Our Time” they changed the glowsticks, passing from red to light blue, creating also the word “TIME” and nine “T” in red color, which represented TVXQ nine years of activity.

Changmin and Yunho were really impressed and happy of their tour, which was a completely success making them even closer to their Japanese fans. Yunho also cried at about the end of the concert.

In the film business these days, China seems to be the word on everyone lips as its market is in the midst of a breathless expansion. However, strict quotas on foreign imports mean that only 35 international films get to share in the spoils. To get around this system, a number of foreign companies have begun co-producing films with China, though the results thus far have been mixed. The Korean media giant CJ Entertainment has been investing in the mainland for quite some time but they have just scored their biggest hit with the romantic comedy A Wedding Invitation, their first fully-produced film for the Chinese market.

Modu Tour Japan, an inbound travel agency that brings Japanese travelers to Korea, has filed a 280-million_won lawsuit against Woollim Entertainment and Excellent Entertainment, the concert organizer.

The concert, New Wave K-pop, was supposed to be held in Whajung Indoor Arena at Korea University in December 2011. Korea’s leading idol stars, including Infinite, MBLAQ, and others, were scheduled to perform.

The travel agency claims that they made a contract with the concert organizer, invested in the event, gathered Japanese travelers to come to it, and made reservations for accommodations, but the organizing body suddenly canceled the event a day before it was to take place.

In February 2012, the organizers justified their decision to cancel on the grounds that they had no choice because a large crowd had gathered at an Infinite solo concert instead. They filed a 50-million-won lawsuit against Infinite’s agency, but lost in court.

An official of Infinite’s agency says, “We don’t understand why they filed a suit against us. We had no direct contract with them. We will know more in detail after receiving the petition.”

YG Entertainment is the home of longtime favorite K-pop groups like 2ne1, and Big Bang in addition to popular solo artists like Lee Hi and PSY, the first k-pop artist to sweep all of the charts pretty much worldwide, including in the U.S. Since Gangnam Style, while there have been no other hits of quite that magnitude, YG Entertainment has been churning out hits like PSY’s Gentleman, CL’s Baddest Female, Lee Hi’s Rose and G-Dragon’s MichiGo, and they have no intention of stopping. In addition, one of the members of Big Bang, DaeSung/ D-Lite is currently on tour in Japan. YG recently posted on their website that they intend to begin debuting a new girl group in October, the same month in which 2ne1′s next album (it has yet to be decided whether it will be full-length or a mini-album) is set to release. The new girl group was initially set to debut with ten members, but the count has dropped to six. YG plans to debut them in a new fashion; each member will debut separately starting in October and then they will come together as a group. The group’s average age is seventeen, and said to be fluent in Korean, English and Japanese. YG has confirmed that one of the six members is EunBi Kim, a contestant from Super Star K. This will be the first girl group debuted by the company since 2ne1′s debut in 2009. I don’t know about you, but I think these new girls will be nothing short of fantastic, and I hope they can measure up to the skills of their seniors in YG Entertainment.

I know over in America people are going nuts over Cronuts these days. I tell you, the oddball item that Chef Ciaran Hickey says is popular at the W Seoul Walkerhill is the Leek Doughnut. He sent me a box of them.

Lovely packaging.

These aren’t the doughnuts with the holes in them. Now, I was expecting them to be something that wasn’t obvious. Maybe they were savory doughnuts. Maybe the leeks weren’t that prominent.

No, they were exactly what you’d expect. Sweet pastries with oniony bits of leek. It was unsettling at first, but I got hooked on them. They’re doughnuts for grown-ups. They also had a lusciously pornographic cream inside. I was performing lewd acts with my tongue.

Continuing from the previous rant.

Naver participates in the same off-the-shelf lazy programming that many Korean web services do. Being the dominant player with lots more money, you’d think they’d know better.

One of the many egregious boners they pull is using ActiveX for their services. ActiveX was brought about by Microsoft in 1996 and has since been abandoned by almost everyone, including Microsoft, because it’s an insecure, lousy internet solution. But many Korean websites still rely on it. I think it’s because there are many ActiveX plug-ins that are readily available, and the programmers are either too lazy, uncreative, or incompetent to program their own solutions. So they just take what’s available and redress it with their company’s logo.

But this is how Naver is even more insidious. I was cleaning out some programs on my computer this morning. I saw that Naver had an ActiveX control in my program list.

You can see it’s from NHN Corp., which is Naver. But look at the gibberish. This is another indicator of lazy programming. They put their text in a very specific encoding that I’m sure only their computers are set up for. They don’t test this on other computers to see if it works outside the Naver campus bubble. My laptop is a completely Korean computer with a legal Korean copy of Windows 7 running. So there’s no reason why Korean would pop up as gibberish on my screen.

So I double-click to remove this abomination.

More gibberish! But the pre-programmed uninstall wizard at least has the buttons in Korean. I clicked 도음 (Daum), which means “Next.”

Even more gibberish! And it looks like an error message. The button just means “Enter.” It brings me back to the previous window. So this means that

I can’t even remove this stinking program!!

How incompetent/evil do you have to be to have a program that can’t even uninstall?

To sum up, Naver sucks because they

Still rely on ActiveX

They can’t even encode text properly

You can’t uninstall their programs

Time for another Open the Whoopass on a Movie video. Yay! This time, I’m talking about why Man of Steel was a terrible sack of crap. I was harsh on Iron Man 3, but…whooooaaaa. Man of Steel was a lot lot lot lot worse. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t watch it. If you get frustrated by the illogical actions of idiots for the sake of plot pushing, don’t watch this movie. Watch Star Trek: Into Darkness. If you’ve seen it, and want to spend your money on Man of Crap, spend your money on a ticket for Star Trek again. Watching that movie twice is better than watching Man of Steel once.

One of the points I forgot to mention in the video is this: yes, I know you might be confused and wondering what channel you’re watching. Who am I, and why am I on the eatyourkimchi channel? Eatyourkimchi is mostly Simon and Martina. Simon wears glasses. You don’t have glasses, weird angry guy, so WHO ARE YOU?!?! Sure, that’s part of the Superman mythology, that he puts on glasses and people can’t recognize him, but COME ON! Laurence Fishbird saw this white dude flying in the air in blue spandex. I think he’d remember if someone looked like him in the future! BARGH!

Another point: at the end of the movie the city sure does look fine and dandy, rather than a city that was nearly DESTROYED UTTERLY INTO DUST. You know how much money it would cost to repair that all? Who’s paying the bill? Lex Luthor?

Ah. I don’t know. It’s like they started writing the screenplay for the movie thinking “I want to see Superman fight other Supermen,” wrote in those parts, and then came up with drivel to fill in the rest of the movie. The villains were stupid. Superman was kinda stupid. The plot was stupid. The climax was stupid. All of it, just a really, really bad film.

Maybe you’re DC biased, and Superman is one of your favorite characters ever, so you feel you have to watch it. First of all, where are you?! I haven’t met a single person who likes Superman. The idea of him is cool, but I’ve never met anyone into reading Superman comics and being like “yeah, Superman rocks!” I read “Kingdom Come” and Superman sucked. If anyone can recommend a Superman comic line worth reading, please share. I need to try to find something good about him.

She is one of many artists to be hospitalized for this reason.

It was just last month that Hyuna from 4 Minute was hospitalized due to a high fever and exhaustion. While news of a celebrity being hospitalized due to fatigue is nothing new, it still begs the question… do entertainment companies push their artists too far?

Artists certainly have an idea of what is expected of them when they sign a contract and know certain sacrifices will be required if they want to be successful. However, cases of fatigue and exhaustion are being reported at an alarming rate.

The list of singers, actors and musicians who have suffered from fatigue over the past few years seems endless. Han Seung-yeon from Kara collapsed from exhaustion and anemia. Leeteuk of Super Junior received IV treatments in the hospital after suffering from severe fatigue and exhaustion. T-ara’s Jiyeon visited the hospital for fatigue but left in order to perform on stage. After finishing “Boys Over Flowers”, Kim Hyun Joong fainted while filming a commercial due to exhaustion and a schedule which was only allowing him 2-3 hours of sleep a night.

The injuries and sicknesses are not just limited to exhaustion however. Seungho from MBLAQ once collapsed on stage after performing a difficult dance routine due to a herniated disc and overexertion. BoA broke her leg onstage several years ago and had to be carried off the stage after she completed her performance. Minho of Shinee suffered a partial rupture of his calf muscle during filming. Eunjung once performed with a sprained ankle and went on the rupture her knee several weeks later.

Perhaps one of the most notable instances of Kpop artists suffering from exhaustion is back in 2010- when every one of the members of the group F.cuz had to be hospitalized due to exhaustion from their busy schedules as they prepared for their debut.

Soyeon from T-ara once famously reported that the group had not been granted a single day off in 12 months. A member of Super Junior once revealed they had only slept for one 1 hour over a period of 3 days when shooting a new music video.

It is schedules and working conditions such as these that led Hangeng (formally of Super Junior) to file for an early termination of his contract, citing reasons such as unfair hours and busy schedules which led to fatigue and such severe health issues as kidney problems.

When most artists suffer from health problems or hospitalizations, the official word from the companies always reassures fans that the health of the artist is top priority and they will be getting the rest they need. However, if their health was truly the top priority, it seems that such exhausting and fatiguing schedules wouldn’t be allowed in the first place.

I can only hope that it won’t take a truly serious injury or accident to make some of these companies finally wake up and realize that they are sacrificing the health and well-being of their artists for the sake of successful promotions and good ratings.

In the meantime however, the schedules continue…

This is one of those unique finds in Korea. Pet ownership is a relatively new concept, so some cafes have opened up that have cats for people to pet and play with.

I took the family up into Seoul to Myeong-dong this past weekend to see an expat production of “The Wizard of Oz.” This was Jian’s first trip to Myeong-dong and EJ’s first time here in years. Part of this trip was to prove to EJ that Jian was old enough to take on city excursions. I think I succeeded in this. EJ realized how much she missed this area–her clothes shopping paradise.

We had been wanting to take Jian to one of the handful of cat cafes in Hongdae. We saw a person dressed in a cat costume advertising a new cat cafe in Myeong-dong, so we checked it out after watching the musical.

SHE WENT NUTS!!!

At cat cafes, you pay a sort of admission fee–after a thorough disinfection ritual at the door. This usually includes a beverage of your choice. You can even buy some cat treats. There are some rules to follow as well. A lot of them. But they’re mostly common sense, such as don’t surprise them, don’t pick them up, be excellent to each other, party on dudes. There are also some toys to taunt the kitties with. When we were there, the felines were more interested in ignoring everyone. In fact, after Jian had been there for five minutes, the cats had mostly taken to the high ground. After a while, she decided to be a cat herself.

Watch.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The customers were more entertained by Jian. Maybe we should open a Jian cafe.

Part of Connor McMorran’s coverage for MKC of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (June 19-30, 2013).

Following last year’s retrospective of the works of the long overlooked Japanese director Shinji Somai, Edinburgh International Film Festival’s artistic director Chris Fujiwara now brings focus onto two likewise overlooked aspects of global cinema: the films of Sweden and Korea. Film festivals are an interesting concept as they bring films from all over the world to one particular town or city, allowing local cineastes to explore and discover a wide variety of directors and works. Yet, unfortunately, their main flaw is often their attempt to house such a diverse range of cinematic voices over the relatively short space of one or…

The group held a guerrilla concert on June 15 in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and introduced the new song “Are You OK?” and the new version of “I’m Sorry,” both from their new album to be released in July.

“I’m Sorry” was the title of a song on the album Lights Go On Again, which they released in November, 2010. It is unusual to have versions of the same song on different albums, and the reason the group decided to do this is not known yet.

The new version of “I’m Sorry” is in a medium tempo and begins with the sound of a guitar. It is more focused on the members’ voices than on the beat. The lyrics express the emotions of a man who didn’t treat a previous lover well and says he is still waiting for her.

In contrast, the previous version of “I’m Sorry” starts with rap and the beat is stronger. Several musical instruments are matched well with the dance performance. A man regrets having sent a lover away and is still waiting for her. He keeps saying “I’m Sorry.”

The group will do a solo concert in July.
